James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon Whiskey is made from a mash of approximately 62% corn and malted barley, and 38% rye. After distillation, the bourbon is aged for a minimum of five years in new, American oak casks. As a result, it has slightly sweet hints of vanilla, toffee and caramel, that subtly compliment notes of baking spices, spicy rye and oak. |

Purchased at: | Philadelphia | Purchased for: | About $150.00 | Info on this bottle: | This is the 15 year old straight rye whiskey | Nose: | Very light nose | Taste: | Absolutely lovely, fascinating orange oil taste, no must or old books taste as some aged ryes have, rounded and restrained wood and char notes despite the age. Just a faint hint of the Blue Cheer (detergent) odor I get in much younger Lawrenceburg, Indiana rye, e.g., Bulleit's. This is 90% rye, 10% (presumed) barley malt, a classic straight whiskey recipe from the 1800's. Jimmy didn't crack no corn for this honey. | Finish: | Instead of the tannic hit almost all Kentucky rye has at this age, it slides down like the the purest spring water if you zinged it with ozone. But the freshet still carries the full rounded flavors of choice aged rye: it's a silk route all the way down. A whiskey whose complexity and appeal derive surely from countless elements whose combination by some obscure wand of providence has provided an ultra-good result. A first class whiskey and then some, certainly in my top 5 bourbons or ryes ever tasted. | Overall: | 10/10. |

Review from jneyer05 (BourbonEnthusiast Review ID 2255, Created:20131002203616) Purchased at: | Party Source | Purchased for: | $32 | Nose: | Strong vanilla, caramel | Taste: | Spicy with peppermint, buttery texture | Finish: | Medium last, not as strong as anticipating, tobacco, caramel | Overall: | Very interesting bourbon. I enjoy the complexity for the entire drink. The nose is a strong vanilla, caramel but the rye quickly takes over in the taste: heavy spiciness and peppermint. A buttery texture comes out here as well. The finish is medium-last with the caramel coming out with hints of tobacco. Very enjoyable drink. |
